Supporting the Whole Person with Pastoral Counseling

Pastoral Counseling offers to all students, at any time of need, the welcome of compassionate presence, attentive listening, and the necessary pastoral support for them to move, effectively, through and beyond a time of discernment or difficult challenge. In keeping with the Sacred Heart Academy Mission Statement, which remains committed to the growth and development of the “whole young woman,” the Pastoral Counselor provides an interdisciplinary approach of counseling and guidance that weaves together the spiritual and psycho-social and emotional developmental dimensions in order to offer a more holistic approach to caring for, supporting and encouraging the whole person: mind, body and spirit, toward a healthier and healing place.

Peer Connection

Part of Sacred Heart’s history for almost forty years, Peer Connection is a community built on the pillars of group support, peer mediation, confidential listening, and respect. Peer Connectors work closely with Mrs. Mazzariello and strive to reach out with love and compassion to members of the Sacred Heart student body. Students may apply to become a Peer Connector during the spring of their freshmen year. After an extensive interview and selection process, accepted students begin their training as Peer Connectors. Peer Connectors help to support the Freshmen Transition course and, throughout the year, provide meaningful mentorship to Freshmen.

“Pastoral counseling at SHA adds a spiritual dimension to the traditional role of high school counseling, which distinguishes it from other schools. Mrs Mazzariello creates an environment of calm compassion and genuine kindness. She offers a safe nonjudgmental haven where our daughters can express all kinds all emotions. She helped our daughter navigate  adolescent stressors, relationships and group dynamics while developing emotionally and spiritually. Mrs Mazzariello empowered our daughter by teaching her to believe in herself and that she has value and can do anything she puts her mind to. She is now much more confident, has strong convictions and is involved in activities where she can give back. We are so grateful for Mrs.Mazzariello for her dedication and skill. As a unique resource, her service Is one of the many reasons why SHA is such special place.”

“The high school experience can be difficult to navigate, but with the care and support from Mrs. Mazzariello, the pastoral counselor, I never felt like I had to face it alone. I sincerely admire and am appreciative of the respect and understanding she showed me and the other girls.”

“The Office of Pastoral Counseling, and Mrs. Mazzariello specifically, sees past the student/athlete/artist to the whole person, a person deserving of care and kindness. Because of her interactions with the Office of Pastoral Counseling, our daughter became a leader and mentor to other young women who were unsure of their path or where they belonged.  The Office of Pastoral Counseling was an incredible gift to our family that went far beyond the four walls of Sacred Heart Academy.”
