VIRTUS Training

Protecting Our Students

At Sacred Heart Academy, your daughter's safety is of utmost importance to us. Our students are our treasures and we do our very best to keep them safe. To this end, Sacred Heart asks that all persons coming in contact with our students be VIRTUS-trained.

Under the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) mandates that all employees and volunteers who come in contact with children or vulnerable adults must undergo VIRTUS training. We are pleased to inform you that all members of our faculty and staff are VIRTUS-certified and many of our current parents and volunteers have completed the training.

VIRTUS is a three-hour program which includes videos, writing exercises, and small and large discussion groups. Topics such as signs of a perpetrator, warning signs in children who might be being abused, what we can do to protect children, and ways to get help are covered.

If you are interested in being a volunteer in any capacity, this program pertains to you. To find a training near you, visit www.virtusonline.org and select "Registration" on the left-hand navigation. Once you complete the VIRTUS program, or if you already have, please email a copy of your certificate to Cindy Tracz at ctracz@sacredhearthamden.org.

From VIRTUS Online...

The word virtus, derived from Latin, means valor, moral strength, excellence, and worth. In ancient times, virtus denoted a way of life and manner of behavior that always aspired to the highest, most positive attributes of people and aspects of human interaction.

VIRTUS is the brand name that identifies programs designed to help prevent wrongdoing and promote "rightdoing" within religious organizations. The VIRTUS programs empower organizations and people to better control risk and improve the lives of all those who interact with the Church.
