  • What is a typical day at SHA?

    The day begins at 8:00 a.m. with homeroom and ends at 2:10 p.m. Clubs usually meet from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. and sports practices begin at 3:00 p.m. Students plan a schedule with a maximum of four 80-minute classes per day, with courses meeting every other day in a rotating block schedule. There is a mid-morning break and lunch period for all students to complete the schedule. A core curriculum of basic courses in grades 9 and 10 is enhanced with a wide range of electives available. Throughout the four years, the curriculum prepares each student with a strong foundation in the humanities, arts, mathematics, and sciences.
  • Are courses taught on different learning levels?

    Courses are available at three learning levels: College Prep, Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP) for college credit.
  • Is there a transition program to help freshmen adjust to high school?

    Yes. Our freshman transition program is designed to give students the tools necessary to make the transition from middle school to high school successfully. Developing more effective study strategies, time management techniques, and communication, note taking and organizational skills enables them to become more independent learners. Students gain a sense of empowerment, a feeling of self worth, and a stronger work-ethic. Consequently, they are more motivated to learn. In addition to the curriculum presented in the classroom, students are further supported by meetings with the Educational Resource Coordinator in the Study Skills Resource Center.
  • Does the faculty offer help after school?

    All faculty members are available for help at the end of each school day. Teachers offer scheduled study groups after school for further assistance. The National Honor Society members provide peer tutoring to fellow students in a variety of subjects during the school day and after school.
  • How do you enable students to reach their full potential?

    Dedicated faculty, classrooms equipped with SmartBoards and the latest in technology, coupled with a beautiful environment create an atmosphere where students work to their highest potential. Students find that at Sacred Heart there are many students just like them who want to do their best.
  • How do you build leadership?

    Our teachers, advisers, and coaches give individualized attention to all students as they reinforce success and provide guidance. From learning to lead in the classroom, to clubs and activities, to sports, our students are given opportunities to build self-confidence and to develop public speaking skills.

    Our teachers realize that, today, our students must know how to find the information they want and to be able to critically analyze it while seeking a creative response.   • Q: When is Open House?

    Open House is typically held on the Sunday following Columbus Day Weekend each October. This year, Open House 2018 will be held on Sunday, October 14 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
  • Q: Who is invited to attend Open House?

    Everyone is invited to our Open House. Young people of all ages, parents and friends will benefit from the experience. You do not need to phone in advance to tell us you plan to attend.
  • Q: How do I begin the application process?

    Complete our online application by visiting our website and clicking on "The Admission Process" under our Admissions link.
  • Q: Is an interview required to apply to Sacred Heart Academy?

    Interviews are not required for applicants to grade 9, but may be helpful especially if there are special circumstances that need to be explained. The interview is an opportunity for the applicant to begin to know SHA better and for us to see the applicant as a person beyond grades, test scores and essays. All applicants for other grades must arrange for an interview by contacting the school.
  • Q: Do I need to have teacher recommendations?

    Yes. We ask that your English and math teacher each complete a required recommendation using the forms provided online through our website. We also provide a Supplemental Recommendation Form that is optional. These forms may be printed. Please give each teacher the appropriate form along with a stamped envelope addressed to Admissions at Sacred Heart Academy.
  • Q: What test do I take in order to apply to Sacred Heart Academy?

    Sacred Heart Academy uses the STS High School Placement Test for our entrance exam. The Entrance Exam will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to Noon.
  • Q: What is the application deadline?

    The application must be submitted online by October 30, 2018.
  • Q: How old is Sacred Heart Academy?

    Sacred Heart Academy was founded in 1946 on Greene Street in New Haven. In 1956 the school was moved to its current location on Cherry Hill in Hamden.
  • Q: What are Sacred Heart Academy's school colors?

    Our athletics teams wear red and white, but maroon is more common in our uniforms and print materials.
  • Q: Are there campus tours for visitors?

    You may request a campus tour by phoning the admissions office at 203-288-2309 if you missed the Open House.
  • Q: What is the procedure for a transfer student?

    Applicants who apply for grade 10 must complete our online application for admission, submit academic records, required teacher recommendations and take the entrance exam on Saturday, November 3, 2018. In addition, all applicants for grade 10 must arrange for a personal interview by phoning the admissions office for a time and date. The procedure for application to grades 11 and 12 is the same as that for transfer students to grade 10 except that the entrance exam is not required.
  • Q: How many students go on to college after graduating from Sacred Heart Academy?

    All graduating seniors go on to four-year colleges and universities.
  • Q: What is the cost of attending Sacred Heart Academy?

    For the 2018-2019 academic year, the costs are as follows:
    • Tuition $15,500
    • Estimated textbook expenses $400 to $1,000
    • Estimated school uniform expenses $200
    • Athletic of $50 per sport, per athlete
    Tuition covers most course and activity fees. The tuition includes the class trip fee, use of a wireless laptop computer, internet access, email account, and usage of all school technology. Travel to and from school is not included in tuition.
  • Q: Is financial aid available at Sacred Heart Academy?

    Yes. Sacred Heart Academy is fortunate to have the support of our loyal alumnae and other benefactors whose generosity has provided scholarship aid for our students. Each year approximately 35% of our students received scholarships and financial aid from 72 named scholarships and from the general fund.
  • Q: When do we apply for financial aid?

    All financial aid information is available on our Financial Aid page. New students may apply for financial aid from August 1, 2018 until December 10, 2018. Financial aid awards are based on need and number of requests, and are given along with acceptance in January 2019.
  • Q: Who qualifies for financial aid?

    There are many factors that affect award decisions, including a family’s income, assets and number of children in schools that charge tuition.
  • Q: Will our financial aid change from year to year?

    The financial aid award may change. Financial need and awards are calculated each year using up-to-date information.
  • Q: What happens in cases of divorce, separation, and single parents?

    Sacred Heart Academy considers the income and assets of both biological parents in determining an award.
  • Q: What are the deadlines when applying for financial aid?

    The financial aid application must be completed and sent online by December 10, 2018. Complete the financial aid application and send signed copies of this year’s completed IRS 1040s including all schedules, W-2s and 1099s along with the application to the financial aid company. No award can be finalized until the company receives completed and signed current year tax forms. They are essential to the financial aid process. Financial aid awards are given along with acceptance in January 2019.
