Athletic Accolades—Fall 2019

The following awards were presented and highlights announced at the Fall Athletic Banquet, held in November at Cascade. More than 300 athletes, families, and guests attended to celebrate our athletes and the successful seasons of our fall teams. 

Cheerleading
Sportsmanship Award—Eyram Ocloo ’21
Most Improved Player—Alexandria Yezik ’22
Most Valuable Player—Ava Maselli ’20
Excelsior Award Nominee—Alyssa Harduby ’20
Highlights—Mia Sandillo ’20 signed and will attend Division I Quinnipiac University for Acrobatics and Tumbling
 
Cross Country
Sportsmanship Award—Karly Martino ’22
Most Improved Player—Morgan Dubay ’20
Most Valuable Player—Emily Birney ’20
Excelsior Award Nominee—Sophia Baldino ’20
 
Highlights— Cross Country won the Quinnipiac Division and had the best finish since its inception at the SCC Tournament. Emily Birney ’20 was named to the All-SCC Second Team.
 
Field Hockey
Sportsmanship Award—Hannah Guth ’20
Most Improved Player—Maya Boyhen ’22
Most Valuable Player—Jianna Cohrs ’21
Excelsior Award Nominee—Hannah Guth ’20

Highlights—Field Hockey advanced to the SCC and CIAC State Tournaments. Jianna Cohrs ’21 was named to the All-SCC First Team and the All-State First Team, Mia Celentano ’21 was named to the All-SCC Second Team, and Jianna Cohrs ’21 and Mia Celentano ’21 were selected to play in the Junior Select Game. Paige Gambardella ’20 was named our SCC 2019 Fall Scholar Athlete.
 
Soccer
Sportsmanship Award—Jada Ijeh ’21
Most Improved Player—Rosa Rizzitelli ’22
Most Valuable Player—Ella Guth ’22
Excelsior Award Nominee—Chloe Falls ’20

Highlights—Soccer advanced to the CIAC State Tournament and received a Team Academic Award from the United Soccer Coaches Association. Jada Ijeh ’21 was named to the All-SCC First Team and the New Haven Register All-Area First Team, Ella Guth ’22 was named to the All-SCC Second Team, and Gabriella Groves ’20 earned an Award of Excellence from United Soccer Coaches Association.
 
Swimming & Diving
Sportsmanship Award—Bella Velez ’22
Most Improved Player—Emily Haag ’22
Most Valuable Player—Eva Cuevas ’21
Excelsior Award Nominee—Kate Convertito ’21
 
Highlights—Eva Cuevas ’21 placed third and earned All-State honors in the 500 freestyle and placed sixth, medaled, and broke our school record in the 100 breaststroke. She was also recognized at the Connecticut Swimming Annual Awards Banquet.
 
Volleyball
Sportsmanship Award—Julia Davis ’20
Most Improved Player—Alexandra Bonadies ’20
Most Valuable Player—Jillian Manning ’20
Excelsior Award Nominee—Julia Davis ’20

Highlights—Volleyball advanced to the quarterfinals of SCC Tournament and Second Round of CIAC State Tournament. Jillian Manning ’20 was named to the All-SCC Second Team.
 
Inaugural Excelsior Award Recipient—Julia Davis ’20
The Excelsior Award is presented each season to the athlete who, within the athletic scope, is impelled by the Love of Christ to live authentically and passionately, share her compassion and integrity with her teammates and coaches, continue to learn and improve in all aspects of the game, think critically, communicate powerfully and intelligently, uphold the human dignity of each person, and commit to being an active participant in the faith of her team. Additionally, the recipient values strong bonds with her teammates, coaches, and the wider Sacred Heart Academy community fully embracing the gifts God has given her to strive “ever higher.”
