Mary Sarah Olson, a 2019 graduate of the Academy, has been notified that she received a $1000 Second Place Scholarship from the National Spanish Examination (NSE), a program of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish (AATSP).
Students are eligible for the scholarship by scoring either a gold, silver, or bronze on the National Spanish Examination. They must then submit an application and a Spanish language writing and speaking sample. Written and oral proficiencies are evaluated by a committee.
“Earning this scholarship is a tremendous achievement,” said National Director of the Exams Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, “…only 60 students are chosen from among the 150,000 students who take the National Spanish Exam each year.”
The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year to students in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. AATSP is committed to recognizing student achievement and promoting language proficiency in the study of Spanish.
Students at Sacred Heart Academy have a long history of high achievement on these exams and are taught by Spanish teachers Kathryn Núñez, Carmen Martinez, Ph.D., and Sr. Elizabeth Doyle, ASCJ.
