Fall Sports Recap

Raymond Degnan, Director of Athletics
Following a very successful fall regular season, the Sharks have moved forward into the postseason. We have a great deal of team and individual accomplishments for which we can be very thankful and proud. Here are some updates on our teams...

Cross Country
competed in both the SCC Championships and the CT State Class M Meet after winning the SCC Oronoque Division. The team had some of the best times and finishes, both individual and team, it has had since 1996 including an 8th place finish at the SCC Championships.

Field Hockey finished their regular season with an 8-0 win over North Haven and has now advanced to both the SCC and CIAC State Tournament. They will square off with Amity Regional HS in the first round of the SCC Tournament on Sunday, November 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Amity and await their first round opponent in the State Tournament.

Game Day Cheerleading continues to work very hard in both practice and on the sideline for the Notre Dame of West Haven Football team as they also begin practice for the upcoming Competitive Cheerleading season. The team was also integral in the great success that was our Fall Sports Pep Rally.

Soccer also wrapped up their regular season with an 8-0 win and have advanced to the CIAC State Tournament. The team has fought all season despite a number of unfortunate injuries and now awaits its opponent in the first round of the postseason.

Swimming and Diving completed their regular season with Senior Night at Albertus Magnus College. The girls had a great season despite a rigorous schedule and now move on to SCC Qualifying for Diving Friday, November 1 at Sheehan HS at 5:30 p.m. and for Swimming Saturday, November 2 at Cheshire HS at 5:00 p.m.

Volleyball also finished their regular season last night with Senior Night here at SHA. The team now readies itself for both the SCC and CIAC State Tournaments. They will host Mercy in the first round of the SCC Tournament this Saturday, November 2 at 3:00 p.m. and await their first round opponent in the CIAC Tournament.

Still more pride for SHA as some sports have already conducted their voting for individual accolades. Senior Emily Birney was named to the All-SCC Second Team in Cross Country, Jianna Cohrs and Mia Celentano were named to the All-SCC First and Second Team respectively in Field Hockey and Jillian Manning was named to the All-SCC Second Team in Volleyball. Also, Senior Field Hockey Captain, Paige Gambardella, will be honored by the Southern Connecticut Conference as Sacred Heart Academy’s recipient of the Fall Scholar Athlete award.

Congratulations to all our teams and student athletes!
