Mary Sarah Olson — 2019 Blessed Clelia Merloni Award Recipient
Senior Mary Sarah Olson was presented with the distinguished Mother Clelia Merloni Award at Commencement Exercises on May 25. This award, named for the foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is one of the top two awards presented each year at Commencement to the senior who, in the opinion of the Sisters of the Academy, consistently exemplifies the ideals of love, service and reparation—the three hallmarks of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The recipient is an outstanding Christian woman and best exemplifies the charism and vision of Blessed Clelia Merloni and the Apostles.
“Mary Sarah is an outstanding Christian woman…she is the quintessential Sacred Heart Academy student, known for her dedication and commitment to the mission, vision, and core values of the Academy and the Apostles. Administrators, faculty members, and fellow students alike have witnessed her compassion for others, her leadership ability, and her passion for service,” offered President Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, Ph.D., ’71.
A member of the National, Math, and Science Honor Societies, Mary Sarah earned high honors all four years. She was also a four-year member of the varsity basketball team, serving as captain senior year, and played soccer all four years. For her accomplishments in academics and athletics she was named our 2019 Scholar-Athlete. In sophomore year, Mary Sarah was selected as our representative to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY) and as a junior she was our nominee for the Governor’s Scholar Award. She was awarded the University of Rochester Xerox Innovator Award and the Princeton University Book Award, and was named an AP Scholar and Summa Scholar. Mary Sarah was an active member of Key Club, Earth Club, Math League, Sister to Sister, Peer Connection, and Charism Connection. She was also a four-year member of the Yale New Haven Hospital Junior Board where she helped raise awareness about issues in the community and spearheaded fundraising activities for the Children’s Hospital.
“I am extremely honored and blessed to be the recipient of the Blessed Clelia Merloni Award. She was a remarkable woman who embodied the values of Sacred Heart, and her charism lives on in the lives of the Sisters and students of Sacred Heart Academy today. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn more about her life and to be a part of the wonderful community that has shaped me into the Excelsior woman that I am today,” offered Mary Sarah.
Mary Sarah is headed to Boston College where she will major in biology.
