Greene Street Girls

Greene Street When the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus first came to the United States from Italy in 1902, they settled in Boston. After 4 years they relocated to Greene Street in New Haven. It was there in the mid-1940s that the idea of founding a high school for girls first took root. Despite the fact that there was already a Catholic high school in New Haven—St. Mary's Academy on Orange Street—the Apostles had the vision that an all-girls high school would be well-received. Sacred Heart Academy opened in 1946.
Only nine classes—1949-1957—graduated from SHA on Greene Street Greene Street graduation 1957before the new SHA opened in Hamden. Those pioneers may not have attended class at SHA in Hamden, but our alumnae heritage is not about the school building, but rather about the memories and traditions that link us despite the distances that may separate us.
The mission of any alumnae association includes reestablishing connections with the graduates of the school. In particular, though, the SHA Alumnae Association seeks to welcome the "Greene Street Girls" who, along with Sr. Antonine and all the Apostles, helped forge the first "strong bonds" which all alumnae value so highly.
Sr. Mariette Moan, ASCJ, '77, Alumnae Director, would love to hear from any of the Greene Street Girls! Your stories, memories, photos, or memorabilia are welcome and much-anticipated.Greene Street alumnae
